| Notes | A song book with musical scores and lyrics for children's songs. Each song is accompanied with instructions for hand movements so that the child is completely engaged in the activity. Songs cover topics such as different occupations, flowers, birds, and Christmas. Two parts in one volume. Part two has a separate title page and is entitled "Songs of the Circle." This song is entitled "Busy Children" and describes the various chores that children have. The refrain of the song is: We little children are busy, sure there is work for us all. The last line of the song is: Work makes us cheerful and happy, makes us both active and strong. Play we enjoy all the better, when we have labored so long. Gladly we help our kind parents, quickly we come at their call. Children should love to be busy, yes there is work for us all. |
| Contextual Notes | Clara Beeson Hubbard was the Director of the Eads Kindergarten in St. Louis, Missouri. She adapted Friedrich Fröbel's "Mother Play and Nursery Songs" into this work so that it could be more successfully employed in American kindergartens. Friedrich Fröbel was a German educator who created the idea of the "kindergarten." He believed that games were how young children made sense of the world and therefore developed the idea of the kindergarten which incorporated various games and directed-play. Susan E. Blow opened the first kindergarten in Des Peres, Missouri in 1873. She was a firm supporter of Fröbel, a lecturer at Teachers College, Columbia University, and she served on the advisory committee of the International Kindergarten Union. |
