NOTESThe mosques in Chake Chake, Pemba and the Mnara mosque in the Malindi section of Stone Town, Zanzibar both feature these unique minarets in the form of towers. Sheriff, in "The History and Conservation of Zanzibar Stone Town" cites Schact as seeing thes ppeculiar minarets as survivals of an ancient Islamic style in East Africa. (Others exist at Mbakari in Mombasa and Shela on Lamu Island.) Thes mosques may date to the seventeenth century, and show close similarities with mosques in the Hadramaut.
