| Notes | The Improved Order of Red Men is a fraternal organization, still in existence, that can be traced back to a 1765 organization called the Sons of Liberty. According to their website, they patterned themselves "after the great Iroquois Confederacy and its democratic body", and they assumed customs and terminology of Native Americans.
