Contextual NotesDescription accompanying photograph reads: Pipeline Slashes Through Wilderness -- Through dense forests and over icy mountain passes, across tundra, rivers and permafrost, the famous ALCANGO pipeline, just completed, now carries vital fuels to defense military bases in interior Alaska. The steel fuel artery stretches 626 miles from the port of Haines to Fairbanks in central Alaska, with 280 miles crossing northwest Canada. The $40,000,000 pipeline, built by the American-Canadian contracting combine Williams Brothers-McLaughlin-Marwell, under supervision of the Alaska District Corps of Engineers, will be dedicated in October.
