| Notes | Printed on verso: Snake River...On the way to Hell's Canyon. These benches hem in the lower reaches of the Snake River, beyond Lewiston, Idaho, but before the river banks stiffwn into dark craigs of the main canyon. There is nobody around and no sign of habitation. The ranches are back in the hills.

| Contextual Notes | The ninety-five mile river mail route down Snake River runs from Lewiston to Johnson's Bar in Idaho and is known for being full of rapids. The tradition of the River Route began in 1926 when Captain Ed MacFarlane was awarded the first mail contract and it is still operational today. |
