| Contextual Notes | Reid has been recognized as the first American geophysicist, specializing in the study of glaciers. His glacial studies included an extended survey of the Glacier Bay region in 1890 and 1892. With a team of five others, he mapped the glacier area of over 900 square miles. His research continued for several years, and his findings were published in a paper on the Glacier Bay area of Alaska in 1896. (16th Annual Report., U. S. Geological Survey).
