| Contextual Notes | Attu was an Aleut village located on the northwest shore of Chichagof Harbor, on the northeast coast of Attu Island in the Aleutian Islands. The village was listed in the 1880 Census with 107 people; 101 in 1890; 29 in 1930; and 44 in 1940. The 1944 Aleutian Coast Pilot relates that this village was mostly destroyed in 1943 in connection with U.S. military operations against the Japanese. The U.S. military forces referred to the village as Chichagof at that time. Currently the island is inhabited only by residents of the U.S. Coast Guard station there. The island is a favorite of bird watchers. [Source: Donald Orth. Dictionary of Alaska Place Names: Geological Survey Professional Paper 567.
