| Contextual Notes | At the end of 1805, the Corps of Discovery built a furnace from rock, which boiled five kettles of oceanwater 24 hours a day for almost two months. This effort resulted in 28 gallons of salt, useful for seasoning and preserving meat on the return journey. |
