| Contextual Notes | Fort Dalles was established by the U.S. Army in 1850 and was originally known as Camp Drum before a permanent name change in the mid-1850s. The fort was inactive after 1867, with an Army caretaker remaining at the site until the 1880s. The Oregon State Historical Society acquired the property at the turn of the 20th century and turned the Surgeon's Quarters into a museum in 1905. Fort Dalles is listed on the the National Register of Historic Places. |
