Contextual NotesThis drawing is from the report of Major Osborne Cross to the Quarter Master General, August 29, 1849. The Hudson Bay Company founded the fort in 1834 as a center for fur trading. It later became a major stop on the Oregon Trail. The fort was closed in 1855 due to flooding and attacks.
