A genuine "international speech" of inestimable service, not only to commerce, but to science, to missionary efforts, and to the convenience of travelers...The pronunciation of 258 important words is clearly indicated...The Chinook-English part gives 320 important jargon words that are in common use, 175 archaic words in a supplement, and nearly 2,000 colloquial phrases in common use, written down as they were heard from the natives and others versed in the idiom. |
| Contextual Notes | The Chinook jargon was used for trading in North America. Possibly developed by the Hudson's Bay Company, the language is a hodgepodge of English, French and Chinook words.
