The institution has eleven professors and instructors, carefully selected, both for Christian character and for ability to do thorough work...In the past seven years, Whitman College has grown to be the leading institution of higher learning and secondary instruction in the Upper Columbia Valley, and in the thoroughness of its work it is not surpassed by any school or college on the North Pacific Coast.
Contextual NotesWhitman College opened in 1882 on the campus of Whitman Seminary in Walla Walla. Under the leadership of presidents Alexander J. Anderson and Stephen Penrose, Whitman became a nationally-recognized liberal arts college.
