| Contextual Notes | On July 1, 1866, the Oregon Stage Company began operating a route from Sacramento to Portland. The company monopolized stagecoach travel between Oregon and California until 1887, when railroads connected the states. Its propreitor, Henry Corbett, was a successful wholesale merchant and the city treasurer of Portland. Corbett served in the United States Senate from 1867 to 1873.
