Building NotesArchitect, educator, and artist Victor Steinbrueck helped foster responsible civic development though his efforts in promoting revitalization programs for the city of Seattle. Along with many others, Steinbrueck's work to raise awareness of Seattle's historic and architectural significance resulted in the city's adoption of historic preservation ordinances, including the one that made Pioneer Square the city's first National Register district in 1970. These drawings were part of a study he conducted of that area in the late 1960s, early 1970s. The State Building was designed by Elmer Fisher in 1890-91 for the Schwabacher Brothers as another warehouse for their wholesale dry goods business. Its original interior has cast-iron columns and steel beams in addition to timber floor joists. The Burke Building was designed by Max Umbrecht and completed in 1900. The building was erected on the location of Charles Plummer's house and outbuildings, which were used as a sentry post during the 1856 Battle of Seattle. In the 1960s, the building was occupied by Sportscaster and Company, a clothing manufacturer and was commonly referred to by that name.
