| Building Notes | Roland Terry was a leading force behind the rise of modernist buildings in the postwar period and through the middle of the 20th century. Incorporating natural materials, open spaces, interior and landscape design with architecture, Terry's designs constitute some of the best examples of Northwest Modernist architecture. Terry's independant practice began in 1960, immediately taking on several residential projects including this one for Philip Stewart. While not strictly Japanese, the Stewart house has a strong Asian influence, which can be seen in both its structure and interior design. Terry used exposed posts and beams to support sloping peaked roofs in order to free up the exterior structure and allow for glass or opaque screens to be used for walls. This created large interior volumes while establishing a powerful econnection between the interior and exterior spaces. Mutiple decks, plantings and stairs connect the house with the swimming pool. An intimate outdoor garden and small reflection ponds, along with the Stewart's collection of Asian artifacts and furnishings, contributed to the overall theme. |
