| Building Notes | Tacoma's grand opera house, the Tacoma Theater, was built in 1889 by the Tacoma Opera House Company and opened Jan. 13, 1890. The building covered a full city block and was touted as the "largest stage on the Pacific Coast" at 67 feet by 42 feet, 55 feet to loft, and a capacity of 1,800. Although the principal architect was Chicagoan J.M. Wood, San Francisco architect John Galen Howard is credited with designing the exterior, and Sydney Lowell the interiors. Major stars such as Al Jolson, Sarah Bernhardt, Harry Houdini, Eddy Peabody, Harry Kahne, and Buster Keaton performed there. It was remodeled for motion pictures, by architects Heath, Grove & Bell, and renamed the Broadway Theater in 1927. It was renamed the Music Box Theater in 1933 until it was destroyed by fire on May 1, 1963. |
