| Building Notes | Architect Henderson Ryan was commissioned to design the retail/residential Blaine building, enlisting Henry W. Bittman as the project's engineer. Ryan arrived in Seattle in 1898 and worked as a contractor/builder for his first year, then started his own architectural firm in 1900. Bittman, originally trained as an engineer, received his architect's license in 1923 and soon became known for his commercial work. The Blaine project contained designs for ground floor retail space, lofts and the Liberty Theater - a moving picture house. The drawings for the theater's floor plans show Ryan's innovative contribution to theatre design: ramped entrances leading to the main auditorium space. |
