| Building Notes | When Carl F. Gould moved to Seattle in 1908, he was one of only a few local architects with extensive training in the profession. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1898-1093), interned with McKim, Mead & White in New York (1903-1905), participated in several national design competitions and even assisted in developing the Burnham Plan for San Francisco with Edward Bennett (1905). Across the span of Gould's career in Seattle, architectural design moved from eclectic adaptations of historical models to the adoption of regional and nontraditional styles espoused by the Modern movement, and his buildings fully reflect this range of expression. |
