| Building Notes | Designed by James H. Schack and Daniel R. Huntington, the first Arctic Club in Seattle was a social club for some of the Pacific Northwest's most prominent citizens. Built with reinforced concrete and faced with brick, this seven story tall building marks the architectural movement away from Richardsonian Romanesque toward grander "skyscrapers". Intended to be a general headquarters and meeting place for visiting Alaskans and their business associates, the club boasted opulant accomodations for its members: bedroom suites, dining/bar facilities, game rooms, a library and reading room, and other communal spaces. As membership grew a new club building on the corner of Third and Cherry was commissioned (designed by A. Warren Gould). As the new building neared completion in 1917, the old building was sold and became the Hotel Morrison. |
