| Abstract | This paper presents a study of the consonant clusters (lo) in Standard Thai as written by Lao students. The subjects studied, 18 Laotian students from Democratic People's Republic of Laos, were given the task of writing six short essays on various topics using Standard Thai. The results show that consonant clusters with (lo) were used 58.1% of the time, while hypercorrection using (ro) occurred 26.1% and complete omission of the element of the consonant clusters (lo) occured 15.8%. The hypothesis as to why hypercorrection with (ro) occured more frequently than the omission of the second element (lo) is due to confusion by non-native speakers. Thai speakers do not pronounce both /lo/ and /ro/ in spoken Thai consonant clusters. In addition, /r/ is more marked than /l/, thus these non-native speakers used (ro) more readily. |
