| Notes | Note taken from a document of unknown origin accompanying some of Harry Hall's photographs: Merrill & Ring, Pysht. In 1927 Merrill & Ring brought three very powerful Washington diesel powered yarders. Two of these machines were equipped with 6 cylinder marine diesel engines. The one in this picture was the largest with 8 cylinders. Although these machines were very powerful they were quite slow, and were not too popular with hooktenders whose reputation was dependent on production. They were not too popular with the rest of the crew either due to the 1 1/2 inch steel core chokers necessary for a machine of this size. Shortly after introduction it became a standing order that the lower gear was not to be used because the sound of the engine could not be depended on to gauge the line pull before chokers parted. In practice they were usually used as 'cold deck' donkeys to yard a setting of approximately 40 acres to the base of the spar tree, which was located approximately 1/2 mile from the track machine. The 'cold deck' was left for one of the big slack line donkeys which moved the logs to the loading donkey at the railroad track. These donkeys had a large diesel tank which allowed them to operate several months without refueling. They always brought in an extra set of guy lines so the tree that they left had a full set of guy lines rigged for use as a tail tree for the slack line donkey.
