| Caption | These three miners smile as they wait for their paychecks at the No. 9 mine of the Northwestern Improvement Co. in Roslyn. A subsidiary of Northern Pacific Railroad, the Northwestern Improvement Co. reopened two mines after a long slack period, largely in response to demand from the Hanford atomic plant and a government order from Korea. Pictured left to right are Toby Wakkuri, unit foreman, Joe Sample, mine electrician, and Alec Bell, miner, all of Cle Elum. |
