Fall City and the Snoqualmie River, ca. 1963
TitleFall City and the Snoqualmie River, ca. 1963
PhotographerUnknown
Dateca. 1963
CaptionIn the early 1960s, King County did extensive work on the Snoqualmie and Raging Rivers at Fall City, Washington, to control seasonal flooding. Workers dredged out gravel bars, straightened the channel, and cleared away trees and brush. They also built revetments of gravel and rock to stabilize the banks. The purpose of this channelization was to reduce flood damage by moving water through the area more quickly. However, it destroyed salmon habitat and caused more serious flooding downstream.
This aerial photo, probably taken in 1963, shows the Snoqualmie River at Fall City. A rock and gravel revetment runs along the downtown area, and the Raging River flows into the Snoqualmie just beyond the bridge. The large brick building with the pointed gables (right foreground) is the Fall City Elementary School.
NotesOn verso: Raging River delta, Fall City revetment. Received December 23, 1963, King County Engineer, Flood Control Division.
