|Title||House on auction to clear the route for Interstate 5 construction, Seattle, 1958 |
|Caption||The 1956 Federal-Aid Highway Act kicked off the Interstate construction program. Completed in the 1960s, Interstate 5 is the only Interstate highway running from Canada to Mexico.|
About 4, 500 parcels of land were cleared along a 20-mile stretch through Seattle to make way for the construction of Interstate 5 from 1958 through 1960. Washington state law guaranteed property owners fair market value for their land, which was appraised by two impartial appraisers. Auctions were then held to divest the state of any existing structures, which were purchase by people either wanting to move them or strip them for salvage.
