Aerotrain at Union Station, Seattle, 1956
Aerotrain at Union Station, Seattle, 1956
TitleAerotrain at Union Station, Seattle, 1956
PhotographerStaff Photographer
Seattle Post-Intelligencer
Date1956
CaptionThe Aerotrain was General Motors' answer to lure passengers out of their cars and back onto the rails in 1956. Though highly stylish, design features such as extremely lightweight, short wheelbase, single-axle trucks and bus-tuned air suspension caused a very uncomfortable ride at the designed top speed of 100 miles per hour. Even with two prototype Aerotrains touring the country, railways were not interested and the trains retired from service in 1966.
NotesHandwritten on sleeve: RAILROADS, General, Aerotrain in Seattle.

Date photograph was filed at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (date of photograph and file date may differ by a month or more): March 14, 1956.
