CaptionBuilt in 1933 in Akron, Ohio, for the U.S. Navy, the USS Macon (ZRS-5) was a 6, 500, 000 cubic foot helium-filled rigid airship, and the sister airship to the USS Akron. The USS Macon participated in extensive Navy exercises over the Pacific Coast and Pacific Ocean through 1934. On the evening of February 12, 1935, the USS Macon encountered a storm off Point Sur, California and crashed into the Pacific. All but two crew members survived.
