CaptionPan American Airways operated a long-distance network of flying boats to carry passengers and freight worldwide. The Alaska Clipper, a Sikorski S-42B, began service in 1936 as the Bermuda Clipper, flying between Baltimore and Bermuda. Renamed the Alaska Clipper in 1940, it served Alaska only briefly until transferred to the South Pacific. As the Hong Kong Clipper II, the plane flew between Hong Kong and Manila until destroyed by Japanese bombing in Hong Kong in 1941.
This photo shows the Alaska Clipper docked at Matthews Beach on Lake Washington in 1940.
