| Title | Burien Public Library storyteller with children, Burien, July 1961 |
| Photographer | Vallentyne, John Seattle Post-Intelligencer |
| Date | 1961 |
| Caption | Burien, Washington's first public library opened its doors in 1938, during the Great Depression. Local residents contributed books, and the federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) paid the librarian's salary. The librarian supplied her own desk and curtains and brought wood from home to heat the library. The Burien Library joined the King County Library System in 1946 and moved to its current site in 1970. In 1998, the library housed over 100, 000 books as well as videotapes, compact disks and other media.
In this photo, taken during the summer of 1961, a storyteller from the Burien Public Library reads to a group of children in a shady spot in a nearby park. The photo was probably taken to promote the summer reading program. At the time, the library was located at the corner of Fourth Avenue SW and SW 153rd Street. |
