| Caption | Bertha Knight Landes was the first woman to be elected mayor of a major American city. In her single term, from 1926 to 1928, she improved law enforcement, expanded the programs of the parks department, and improved the management of City Light. Mrs. Landes didn't think of herself as a career politician, and she retired from politics after losing the next election. Frank Edwards succeeded her in the mayor's office until he was recalled in 1931. |
