TitleAerial of Luther Burbank School, Mercer Island, May 31, 1933
PhotographerLaidlaw, Charles
Date1933
CaptionThe origins of the Luther Burbank School date back to the turn of the twentieth century, when Major Cicero Newell and his wife Emma sought help from the Seattle School Board in purchasing a large plot of land for a parental school to aid "neglected, indigent, and unfortunate children." The school opened on June 10, 1905 and during its first years both boys and girls lived on site and received instruction in academic and industrial subjects. In 1914, the girls were transferred to a parental school in Ravenna, and the Mercer Island site expanded to include more land with additional buildings. The name changed to Luther Burbank School for Boys in 1931. It operated until 1965, and then King County purchased the site for a park. One of the school dormitories has been preserved, along with the steam plant.
NotesHandwritten on sleeve: Reform-Parental School, Mercer Island 5/31/33.
