CaptionThe Reverend Mark A. Matthews, a southern-born fundamentalist supporter of the Social Gospel movement, came to Seattle in 1902 and became the pastor of Seattle's First Presbyterian Church. Outspoken and active in public debate, he was a staunch proponent of 'Social Christianity, ' which combined progressive public social reform with Christian values. While referred to as a 'showman' by some, he backed up his support of social reform by establishing day-care centers, soup kitchens, night classes and other community-oriented services.

In this photograph, taken in the late 1920s, Reverend Matthews is standing next to a train with a group of children and is holding a young girl.
NotesHandwritten on image: Dr Mathews [sic].
