| Title | Graffiti on Japanese American home, Seattle, 1945 |
| Photographer | Staff Photographer Seattle Post-Intelligencer |
| Date | 1945 |
| Caption | On December 18, 1944, the United States government announced that Japanese Americans in internment camps could return to their homes after January 1, 1945. In Seattle, and elsewhere on the West Coast, this was a controversial issue. When the first returnees arrived in Seattle in January, some found a cold welcome and vandalized property. The Seattle Civic Unity Committee, the University Friends Meeting (Quakers) and other groups and individuals worked hard to reduce racial tension and ensure a smooth resettlement. |
| Notes | Graffiti reads: No Japs Wanted Here.
Handwritten on sleeve: Nagaishi, S. - Home (Anti-Jap signs).
Date photograph was filed at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (date of photograph and file date may differ by a month or more): May 29, 1945. |
