| Title | Bobo the gorilla's fourth birthday, Seattle, July 1955 |
| Photographer | Staff Photographer Seattle Post-Intelligencer |
| Date | 1955 |
| Caption | Anacortes native Bill Lowman brought an infant lowland gorilla home to his parents in 1951. Mr. & Mrs. Raymond Lowman raised the gorilla, which they named Bobo, as part of the family. Two years later, when Bobo grew too big to stay in the Lowmans' home, he moved to Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo. Until his death in 1968, Bobo was one of the city's best-known residents, delighting a generation of children and adults.
This July 1954 photo shows Raymond Lowman and his granddaughter Claudia Lowman serving birthday cake to Bobo the gorilla at the Woodland Park Zoo. Each year, the zoo invited children and television personalities to celebrate Bobo's birthday. |
