| Caption | The Century 21 monorail was designed to carry people between downtown Seattle and the World's Fair site. ALWEG Rapid Transit Systems, a West German firm, began contruction in April 1961, and the monorail opened to the public less than a year later. The trains carried over eight million people during the six months of the fair.
This image shows one of the streamlined monorail trains at the Westlake Station in downtown Seattle. The system is still in use today, carrying some 2.5 million passengers yearly between Westlake Center and Seattle Center. |
