Date1940
CaptionAuto transportation was creating increasing problems in the Seattle area in the 1940s. Highway 99, the principal throughway, drew much traffic into the heart of the city. As the Depression faded and wartime industries began to pick up, thousands of workers had to move in and around by car. Highway improvements became a major concern.

In this photo, a high school band, Red Cross representatives and city safety officers gather beneath a sign that reports the number of traffic deaths. Three names were recorded by the photographer, probably the drum majorettes in the foreground, as Nancy Hawley, Audrey Allen and Betty Roberts.
