| Caption | Princess Marie of Edinburgh, daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh and referred to as 'Missy' by her family, grew up under the strict rule of her mother while her father was often away serving in the British Royal Navy. Later marrying the Crown Prince Ferdinand, the heir to the Romanian throne and subsequent King, she had an opportunity to apply her intellect and insight to unofficially influence politics through her husband until his death in 1927. In 1926, Queen Marie and her children, Prince Nicholas and Princess Ileana, traveled to America adhering to a hectic schedule with many official visits in both Canada and the United States. Their visit to Seattle on November 4, 1926 included stops at Mayor Landes' office, Roosevelt High School, and the Yacht Club where the activities included a tree planting ceremony in which Queen Marie participated, a dinner sponsored by the Seattle Business Women's club, and a speech by her friend, the businessman and civic activist, Samuel Hill. Queen Marie's other official activities in the state included dedicating Hill's Maryhill mansion in Goldendale on the Columbia River which now serves as the Maryhill Museum of Art.
