CaptionIn 1953, the General Insurance Company of America, today's SAFECO, commissioned Rudolph F. Zallinger (1919-1994) to research and paint a mural for the Museum of History & Industry, depicting the Great Fire of 1889. The mural was unveiled at the museum on February 15, 1953, in an event attended by 48 pioneer eyewitnesses of the historic fire. Attendees, most of whom were youngsters in 1889, exchanged their memories of the event, with the tone more humorous than sorrowful. In keeping with the festive mood, a string quartet played "There'll Be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight" as a curtain was drawn to unveil the mural. The mural was exhibited in the main gallery at the museum's Montlake location until June 2012, when the museum closed for its move to South Lake Union. While the original painting is no longer on display, a nearly full-sized digital reproduction hangs in MOHAI's new space.
