| Caption | St. Mark's Cathedral is located on 1245 10th Avenue East in Seattle, Washington. Founded in 1889, it was designated as the cathedral for the diocese in the 1920s. A building designed by San Francisco architects Brown and Champney began construction in 1928. Due to the stock market crash of 1929, a simpler version of the magnificent Gothic design was built. Most of the structure is made out of concrete slabs. The building's nick name is "The Holy Box" due to its cube shape. After a decade of financial struggles during the Great Depression, the church was put up for sale when the bank foreclosed on its mortgage. The U.S. Army leased the building in 1943-1944. Meanwhile, the parish raised enough funds to pay off the mortgage, and in 1947 it reopened for worship. Here a man and woman look at a For Sale or Lease sign on the lawn in front of the church. |
