PhotographerStaff Photographer
Seattle Post-Intelligencer
Date1937
CaptionSt. Mark's Episcopal Church was founded in 1889 and originally located in downtown Seattle. In the 1920s, it was designated as the cathedral for the diocese and a building designed by San Francisco architects Brown and Champney began construction in 1928. Due to the stock market crash of 1929, a simpler version of the magnificent Gothic design was built. Most of the structure is made out of concrete slabs. The building's nick name is "The Holy Box" due to its cube shape.
In this photo, a procession of children ascend the front steps of the church.
