Date1955
CaptionThis photo shows the view looking east at the Public Safety Building, located at Fourth and Yesler in downtown Seattle.
Designed by architect Clayton D. Wilson and built in 1909, this concrete and steel-framed building initially housed the local police, city jail, emergency hospital, and health and sanitation department. In 1916, City offices relocated to the new County-City Building (now the King County Courthouse), leaving the 400 Yesler building to be the city's first public safety building. The building was abandoned in 1951, then sold in 1957 to private owners. In 1976, the City negotiated with the owners to renovate the building and lease it to the City for offices. King County bought the building in 1991.
