| Title | Young woman listening to a radio on the yacht "Muriel, " ca. 1923 |
| Photographer | Webster & Stevens |
| Date | ca. 1923 |
| Caption | This fashionably dressed young woman gazes out over what is probably Seattle's Portage Bay as she listens to a radio. Radios were still quite new in the 1920s. They had two parts: a receiver which picked up the signal, and a large, trumpet-shaped speaker which made the signal loud enough to hear. The receiver was large because it operated with tubes rather than transistors. |
| Notes | The photograph may have been taken aboard the yacht "Muriel" which belonged to Craig Nelson, son of the founder of the department store Fredrick & Nelson. Around 1923, the yacht was moored at the Seattle Yacht Club |
