Date1935
CaptionIn the 1930s, long distance road journeys were gaining popularity due to an improved highway system and the rise of car ownership. In 1935, Seattle's Evergreen Auto Court offered many services to travelers on the Pacific Highway. The motel's signs advertised cabins, complete with kitchenettes, garages and private showers and toilets. Nightly rates started at $1.00. At the Evergreen, people could buy driver's licenses or gas up their cars. They could even use the services of a notary public or be married in the motel's wedding chapel at any time of day or night by an on-site justice of the peace.
This October 1935 photo shows the Evergreen Auto Court at 9109 Aurora Avenue. Aurora, Route 99, was part of the Pacific Highway which ran from Canada to Mexico.
