CaptionIn 1934, independent retail grocers in Seattle formed Associated Grocers, a purchasing cooperative to improve efficiency. With a constant focus on new products and services, over the years the successful company grew to approximately $1 billion in annual sales, serving grocery retailers throughout Washington, Oregon, Alaska and parts of Idaho. In 2007, Associated Grocers was acquired by United Western Grocers, itself a merger of cooperatives in Portland and Los Angeles. Shortly afterward, the company shortened its name to Unified Grocers.
This photo shows the first Associated Grocery building at 1990 Alaskan Way.
