| Caption | William Randolph Lovelace II (1907-1965) was a pioneering physician and leading figure in aerospace medicine. Himself a pilot, Lovelace studied the problems of high-altitude flight. In 1938 the Aeromedical Field Laboratory located at Wright Field asked him to develop an oxygen mask for use in high-altitude aircraft. Randolph later served in the Air Force during World War II, performing experiments in escape and the use of the parachute at high-altitude. He won the Distinguished Flying Cross for an experiment in which he parachuted from a B-17 to validate the use of a bail-out oxygen bottle during high-altitude descent. Lovelace was later first assistant to Charles Mayo of the Mayo Clinic, and Chief of the Aero-Medical Laboratory at Wright Field. In 1964, he was appointed Director of Space Medicine for NASA and was instrumental in establishing criteria for the selection of astronauts. Lovelace died at age 58 in the crash of a private plane.
