| Caption | In 1936, work began on Mud Mountain Dam in a rocky gorge on the White River, near Enumclaw, Washington. The dam and its reservoir were built to control the serious floods which periodically devastated the White and Puyallup River valleys. Private contractors did the work under the supervision of the United States Army Corps of Engineers. In this January 1940 photo, taken from the edge of the gorge, workers wearing shiny metal hard hats work on the steep slopes above the river (upper r.). The long narrow lines in the lower left appear to be water pipes, probably used to wash away earth and shape the slopes. |
