TitleRiverboat "White Horse, " ca. 1905
PhotographerDoody, J.
Dateca. 1905
CaptionThe steamer "White Horse, " nicknamed "The Old Gray Mare" was one of many Yukon River steamers which carried miners and other travelers to the Klondike gold fields near Dawson. At Five Finger Rapids, the Yukon divided into five channels around four rocky islands. The rapids were so dangerous that a cable was installed and steamboats pulled themselves along through the channel.
This photo, probably taken in 1905, shows the sternwheeled steamboat "White Horse" passing through Five Finger Rapids on the Yukon River.
