Revetment on the Snoqualmie River at Fall City, ca. 1963
Revetment on the Snoqualmie River at Fall City, ca. 1963
TitleRevetment on the Snoqualmie River at Fall City, ca. 1963
PhotographerUnknown
Dateca. 1963
CaptionIn the early 1960s, King County did extensive work on the Snoqualmie and Raging Rivers near Fall City, Washington, to control seasonal flooding. Workers dredged out gravel bars, straightened the channel, and cleared away trees and brush. They also built revetments of gravel and rock to stabilize the banks. The purpose of this channelization was to reduce flood damage by moving water through the area more quickly. In reality, it destroyed salmon habitat and caused more serious flooding downstream.
This photo, probably taken in 1963, shows the Snoqualmie River and downtown Fall City. A rock and gravel revetment runs along the main street. In the foreground are the land and buildings of the Jack Bush family farm. The area's one remaining hop curing shed, a small square building with a pointed roof, stands alone in a field across from the farmhouse.
