TitleRepresentative Albert Canwell the year after the Canwell hearings completed, Seattle, 1949
PhotographerStaff Photographer
Seattle Post-Intelligencer
Date1949
CaptionIn 1946, Albert Canwell ran successfully for a seat in the Washington State House of Representatives, promising to vote for no new taxes and to "do something about the Communists in Washington State." The Joint Fact-Finding Committee initiated its work in 1947, and completed its first two rounds of hearings in 1948. Canwell's work was a model for later anti-Communist crusades, including those of U.S. Senator Joseph McCarthy. In 1948, Albert Canwell lost his bid for re-election, and the fact-finding committee was quietly shut down by the Washington legislature.
