| Caption | During World War II, Seattle residents joined people all over the country to help the war effort. One thing they did was to save meat fat, which they returned to butcher shops and meat markets. The fat was taken to factories where it was used to make explosives for bombs and torpedoes.
In this 1944 photo, four men stand behind the counter of Hay's Market. Posters ask customers to save waste fat and bring it in to the shop. Seattle's four Hay's Markets were only a few of the many stores nationwide which collected fat during World War II. |
