CaptionBishop Edward John O'Dea served the Catholic community for 50 years as a priest. Appointed and ordained a bishop in 1896 in Nisqually, Washington, he presided over the Seattle community and is known for his work with laymen to build and later re-build the St. James Cathedral after the roof collapsed due to a snowstorm in 1916. He died in December 1932 after 36 years as a bishop.

This photo taken later in his life shows Bishop O'Dea proceeding down the church steps with two attendants. Uniformed schoolchildren are waiting for him at the bottom.

Date photograph was filed at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer: March 23, 1933. Bishop O'Dea died on December 25, 1932, so the P-I filing date is likely from when the photograph was refiled after his obituary.
