| Caption | Bishop Edward John O'Dea served the Catholic community for 50 years as a priest. Appointed and ordained a bishop in 1896 in Nisqually, Washington, he presided over the Seattle community and is known for his work with laymen to build and later re-build the St. James Cathedral after the roof collapsed due to a snowstorm in 1916. He died in December 1932 after 36 years as a bishop.
This photo taken later in his life shows Bishop O'Dea proceeding down the church steps with two attendants. Uniformed schoolchildren are waiting for him at the bottom. |
